PSECE 2006

This is the second year in which the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Inc. (SEIPI) organized the Philippine Semiconductor and Electronics Convention and Exhibition (PSECE). The 3-day event includes the Networking Committees symposia and the 4th Philippine Semiconductor and Electronics Exhibition (PSEE) which was held simultaneously at the PICC Secretariat Building and the Forum from 27-29 June 2006.

ASEMEP Technical Symposium

The 16th ASEMEP National Technical Symposium is a project of the Association of the Semiconductor and Electronics Manufacturing Engineers of the Philippines (ASEMEP), hosted by P.IMES Corporation, and organized in cooperation with the SEIPI.

Previous hosts include Intel Philippines Manufacturing, Integrated Microelectronics Inc., Philips Semiconductors Philippines, Inc., Motorola Philippines (On Semiconductor), Analog Devices Philippines, Inc., Electronic Assemblies, Inc., Amkor/Anam Pilipinas, Inc., Integrated Device Technology Philippines, Inc., ASEMEP Officers 2001 – 2002, Texas Instruments Philippines, Inc., Remec Manufacturing Phils. Inc. and Toshiba Information Equipment Philippines, Inc. Next year’s host will be Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Philippines Corporation.

The theme of this year’s symposium is Sustaining Competitiveness Through Technical Vitality Towards A Strong Nation. It features the Engineers’ technical papers, the sponsored learning sessions, the Mobots Competition, the exhibits, and the Fellowship Night.

43 technical papers were presented; a decrease from the 15th NTS totaling 76. On the other hand, 9 lectures compared to last year’s 10, dealing with new or emerging technologies, systems and processes were discussed through the Learning Sessions. A new addition to this year’s symposium was the well-received Mobots competition held at the PICC Forum last June 29. Students from various schools participated in the Microcontroller Applications Design Contest (MADC) organized by IEEE Philippine Section and sponsored by Zilog Electronics Philippines, Inc.

A total of 786 delegates from 48 companies registered for the two-day event. Breakdown of delegate count is as follows: 28 June 2006 = 400 registered = 354 actual attendees; 29 June 2006 = 386 registered = 350 actual attendees. Out of these figures, there were 33 walk-ins for Day 1 and 5 walk-ins for Day 2.

Program

The Opening Ceremonies, hosted by Ms. Ria Lanting of P. IMES Corporation and Mr. Ronald Hilaria of Amkor Technology Philippines, Inc., started with the Invocation and National Anthem led by Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf Choir.

Mr. Jimmy Apolinar, ASEMEP Chairman from Intel Technology Philippines, Inc., delivered the Welcome Remarks while Mr. Tadashi Yamaji, P. IMES Chairman, gave an Inspirational Talk.

SEIPI presented a video clip about the semiconductor and electronics industry update. Atty. Lilia de Lima, PEZA Director General and Dr. Louie Sison, Associate Professor - Dept. of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (UP Diliman) also gave their plenary talks.

The new set of ASEMEP officers were inducted by Mr. Ernie Santiago of SEIPI. Then, the Oneida plate which symbolizes the host companies was handed over to next year’s host, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Philippines Corporation, which was represented by Ms. Grace Decena, Administration Director, and Mr. Kazuya Takeda, President.

The Fellowship Night was held at the PICC Forum Hall 1 last June 29.
Special Prizes were also given during the Fellowship Night. Winners were as follows:

Most Number of Delegates to the ASEMEP NTS – Philips Semiconductors Philippines Inc. (Cabuyao and Calamba) with 65 slots

Most Number of Technical Papers Submitted – Philips Semiconductors Philippines Inc. with a total of 27 technical paper entries

P. IMES Special Award was awarded to Sundy L. Licuanan and Lloyd T. Sison from Philips Semiconductors Philippines Inc. with the technical paper entry entitled “Improving RF Power Amplifier Performance through Bond Wire Loop Height Optimization”. The P.IMES Special Award is given to the Best Written Paper that substantiates Filipino engineers’ global competence and commitment to technology innovation that aspire us for the next generation applications.

In the context of the 16th ASEMEP National Technical Symposium, “Sustaining Competitiveness through TECHNICAL VITALITY Towards a Strong Nation”, this award reflects P.IMES Corporation belief in upholding engineers’ technical competitiveness and excellence in the field of Semiconductor and Electronics industry worldwide.
